People have been known to do some pretty strange and disgusting things in the name of speed. I would cite the 4.2 BSD filesystem as an example of trading off simplicity for speed. (but not as an example of a strange or disgusting hack) Anyway, this topic will probably not benefit from discussion, for I basically agree with you.
