It uses SASI (Shugart Associates Systems Interface), a higher level protocol to control read/write activity from a disk drive, without regard to the physical layout of storage. The system is a Xerox 820 with 10MB hard disk, and a Shugart 1403D (DTC 703) controller. The floppy is controlled by an NEC 765 controller chip. I'll summarize replies to the group net.micro.cpm.
