Thank you, WDoherty. It's really tiring to have to stop and call someone on their sexism- or racism or homophobia or antisemitism. It interrupts one's own activities, taking energy that could be spent on other things--the jobs for which we want recognition, for example, or relationships, or political work or ... you name it. If we "want equal pay" (that's rather a small ambition--i'm working for an egalitarian, humane society, not just equal pay) then women need time to work on their own priorities--gettin the jobs, the skills, the knowledge, the inner strength, families, relationships, and getting them and keeping them in ways that are satisfying to us-- and it angers me and IS UNFAIR that in addition to doing all this we need to stop and educate insensitive unthinking men as well. Men need to educate themselves and not wait for us to do it for them. It's really been a shocker to me since I started reading NET.WOMEN and found NET.Women.only full of men complaining that net.women.only existed, and that net.women is full of men complaining that women treat them rotten. There's a real need for a newsgroup where feminism is an axiom rather than a topic of debate. (note: topics for such a newsgroup might include fine points of feminism-- feminist theory, definitions of feminism, arguments for and against reform or liberal feminism, --as well as relationships, discrimination, armpit hair, and anything else, and such a newsgroup could be open to men, as long as there were no attacks on feminism or feminists or women in the newsgroup. The obvious parallel would be net.motss, where it is agreed that whether or not it's okay to be gay is not a topic for discussion, and where straights are welcome as long as they respect that.)
