The default settings of the search/commit times are 2/6. With a setting of 5/10, a simple benchmark (reading a huge file a block at a time) runs twice as fast! I've left things set at 5/10, and added an srm command to /etc/rc to keep them that way. This may not actually be optimum, but it's a lot better than 2/6.
