The basic idea presented was that most decks which offer bias compensation as a means to obtain optimum frequency response, do so in an sub optimal manner. Ideally, the playblack eq. will be adjusted first with a calibration tape. The tape is then set up so that a compromise is reached between frequency response and output distortion. Recording eq. is then adjusted for flatness of frequency response. (Note the "order"). Finally, Dolby levels are adjusted for tape sensitivity. Ray Chau SiDev Group University of Waterloo
