The problem did was in fact that the tachometer was set for an 8 cylinder engine instead of a 4 cyl. I called the dealer, relayed this infomation to him, and set an appointment for later in the week. When my wife took the car in later in the week, they "checked my tach against another in the shop" and assured me that it was reading CORRECTLY!!!!!! Later that night, I opened the tach myself and set the switch in the proper position. The tach now runs fine. The disturbing part of this story is, of course, that the "mechanics" not only installed the tach incorrectly, but also thought it was reading correctly when it was not. I don't think I want these "mechanics" attempting to fix any more complicated problems I may have.
