Lines: 24 The ZL-1 was an engine option for Camaros and Corvettes. It was an all-aluminum 427 engine that produced about 600 horsepower. Chevrolet developed it to use in the production class drag rac- ing, and in order to use it, the rules called for 50 saleable un- its to be built. Most of the orders were from inside GM, and the others went mostly to Chevy-sponsored drag racers. A couple of these beasts actually made it out onto the street, and one very nice ZL-1 Camaro still exists (that I know of). I think it has about 30,000 miles on it, so it is in very good shape. The in- teresting thing about these engines is the fact that although Chevy listed it as an option for the Camaro, they listed it at 430 horsepower, just under the top-of-the-line cast iron 427 which was listed at 435 HP. Because of this, most people took the cast iron '435' version thinking that it was the stronger en- gine, and the people who bought the ZL-1 were the ones that had inside info on what the engine *really* was. --- Overall there is a smell of fried onions.
