If you are lugging your way up a hill you probably can't do that. If the dog simply will *not* let up, the best thing to do is stop, get off if convenient, and walk straight at the beast with your hand out in a gesture of friendship. I've never seen this fail; either the dog will come drool all over your hand or run away in terror. _H*
