Around where I bike (Champaign county area, Ill.) the land is very flat
and the county roads are almost perfectly straight.  Most of them (99%)
are aligned north-south or east-west and spaced exactly one mile apart
from one another.  In fact, a map of the county roads looks more like
a piece of graph paper.  The roads are numbered even multiples of 100
depending how far they are from the sw corner of the county.  In other
words, road 1200 north is the e-w road exactly 12 miles from the southern
border.

Illinois should be designated the scenic capital of the plains states.
