If it is going to be implemented anyway then please make it optional. Here's my proposal: A "set" option ("modeline", "ml") would be used to enable processing of the "vi:" or "ex:" information. The default would be "nomodeline". Users who wanted this feature could put the appropriate "set" command into their ".exrc" files (or EXINIT environment variables). I, for one, do not want this "feature"; however, at least one local user does.
