I came to the United States in August last year. Since newspapers and TV here cover only politics, ball- games and soaps, I have been completely out of touch with chess news till I got this access to the net. Last August, the situation was as follows: After the quarter-finals, the line-up was Gerry Kasparov vs Viktor Korchnoi at Pasadena, Vassily Smyslov vs Zoltan Ribli at Abu Dhabi ( or thereabouts ) For some inscrutable reason of their own, the soviets protested the venues at the last moment (citing the "heat" and the unfriendly-to-soviets atmos- phere ), and refused to play. The FIDE president, after several attempts to persuade the soviets to reconsider, FORFEITED BOTH THE MATCHES ( to Korchnoi and Ribli respectively). What has happened since then? Why was the forfeiture revoked? When were the matches played? What were the results? I shall be grateful to anybody who can post the reply ( or mail it to me ). Shankar Unni (unni@wisc-rsch.arpa).
