H. O'D. Alexander, in his book "A Book of Chess", describes a version of three-dimensional chess and gives the rules. In his variation there is a new kind of piece introduced -- the Unicorn. It works something like a 3-D knight, I believe. He also gives the rules for several other variations of chess -- if you're interested in such things, you might want to find a copy of the book.
