I, SIR, AM NOT A FREELOADING ASSHOLE or whatever you may have called me. You obviously do not know an asshole from a hole in the ground. I am a graduate student, full time. I have held some sort of part time job since I returned to school in order to finance my education. I am living entirely on my own means on less than $300.00 a month. I know that I am eligable for food stamps and/or welfare or cheese or whatever and have not sought any such aid. I worked for 5 years after I finished undergrad work and have paid off all my guaranteed student loans LONG before they were due to be paid off in full. I AM NO FREELOADER. And I believe that a vast majority of students are also not. Education is this countries MOST valuable asset (as weak as it may be) If you believe that all should not be entitled to an education by providing reasonable means to facilitate such then YOU are the ASSHOLE. On that topic enough said. AS for Regan... For the past 100 years we have intervened in the politics of Central America for our own entirely economic reasons. Always to benefit the US and the large US multinationals. We have maintained dictatorships and such through military presence and have thus hindered the natural process of political as well as social development. I know this because I have a graduate and undergraduate concentration in Latin American Studies. It is an area of interest and I feel that I am an "expert" compared to the common educated US citizen. I do not necessarily advocate socialism nor communism. In fact I believe in the capitalist system. However we have NO right to impose our views and politics on others. (ever hear of human rights??) In Nicaragua a majority of the people have finally been able to oust a vile corrupt murderer (no thanks to us benevolent citizens) and set up their own government. A few (200?) felt that they would rather flee than live under the new government. (The junta did not in fact murder former supporters of the old regeme.) That's their right. All of the land, the banks and industries owned by Samosa (approximately 90% of the nations wealth) was nationalized. SOME of the large landholdings were redistributed. (Why should one person own millions of $ worth of land when there are hundreds of thousands starving??) NO MATTER. We have NO RIGHT to attempt to destabilize such governments. Our own government would have never survived had some super-power interfered with our struggle. If we would have offered to support the Nicaragua junta with all the money we have WASTED in military aid they would be more inclined to accept our form of government than to run to the Soviets. Its only common sense. They were forced to seek aid elsewhere. If we had helped them they would not have felt threatened, those moderates in the junta would be in good positions to have good relations with the US. Instead as they(the people) felt that dealing with us was hopeless, the moderates were losing out to the more leftists. The right wing has proven to be infinitely more ruthless and blood thirsty that even the EXTREME left. But that's ok. As long as IT&T and United Fruit Co., and EXXON, and all of the others are making money, pushing for favorable legislation... what's the difference?? A vote for a continuation of our present policy in Central America is a vote against liberty, human rights and most of the things I thought this country stood for. HAVE A LITTLE HUMAN COMPASSION I fear the threat of the Soviets as much as most people, but I don't check under my bed at night. flame off decvax!idis!barbuto so threatened
