   I think the idea that those who only speak one language are
uncultered slobs, comes from the fact that these people have
close-mindedly narrowed the opportunity for growth to only
one source of input.  Knowing more than one language does NOT
make you learned, or sophisticated or cultered.  It DOES supply
you with the *opportunity* to broaden the base of your knowledge/
culture.
