If the taxes were not taken from the people to fund these programs that money would find its way into the economy without the inflationary effect of passing through government hands. Public handouts are the result of the crying of bleeding hearts and taken up by vote seeking politicians. If our social conscience demands these programs then lets do it in the private sector where we have the freedom of choice and things can be run more effectively. These programs exist (United way, March of Dimes, Second Harvest, Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vinnies etc. etc. etc.) and could meet all the needs for such programs. I propose a program of tax credits for voluntary contributions to such agencies with an amount equal to the tax credits deducted from the federal budget for these programs. This would be set up to phase out the government involvement completely over a few years.
