I have no objection to loaning money to people for an education if they pay it back. A few years ago the news was made public that millions of dollars worth of student loans had been defaulted, which means I had to pay part of the tab for those assholes who made a commitment to pay and didn't keep it. My freeloader comment was referring to certain welfare, workmans comp, and unemployment recipients. I have interviewed job seekers that have told me they don't want the job, they only need credit for an interview to keep their unemplyment. Or the "disabled" truck driver with a broken arm from a skiing accident. How about poor women who have the babies of unknown fathers to keep their ADC payments coming in. It is extremely irritating to me to read some esitmates of welfare fraud as high as 30% and other figures indicating tha 75% to 80% of the welfare budget is administrative cost. That means only $.18 of my tax dollar gets into the hands of those that need it. I am not an uncharitable person, my contributions in 1983 were close to $2000.00. My taxes including Social Security were about $6600.00 if we remove SS and assume 1/3 of the rest goes to social programs my share of that comes to approx. $1000.00 and of that $180.00 went to the needy which means $820.00 of my money went down the drain. I am an independent consultant and I have to write quarterly checks to pay my income and Social Security taxes and beleive me one becomes acutely aware of how much one is paying when a check for $1500.00 or more has to be covered every three months.
