I received many replies, lots of phone calls from salesmen (I didn't know there were so many on the net :-) ), and ended up with a lot of real good information. Since I haven't room to list all of the machines that were mentioned to me, I will first list those that are in the running for the machine for the application I had in mind. Then I will give a list of a few others that were particularly attractive, but just didn't quite meet our needs. In the running: (order not indicitive of preference) (all have business and accounting software available or included) (all run UNIX*, most run UNIX 5.0 or System V) (all available new in good configurations for less than $20K) (all have port cards to take I/O off the main CPU, 1Mg RAM minimum) NCR Tower Altos 68000 (M68000 based, warned it may poop out with too many users) DEC Micro-Vax AT&T 3B2-300 (Has 2Mg RAM, 32-bit CPU) Runners-up: Onyx C8002 with MBSI by Bruce&Wilson, Inc. ($30-50K) Dual Systems DUAL System/83 Plexus P25 (Sounded good, but couldn't find anyone to talk $$) Gifford MPM IBM System 34 Fortune 32:16 (I was warned away by several owners of the machine) ------------------------------------------------------------ * UNIX is a tm of AT&T Bell Labs -- ________ ( ) Don Stanwyck @( o o )@ 312-979-3062 ( || ) Cornet-367-3062 ( \__/ ) ihnp4!ihuxr!stanwyck (______) Bell Labs @ Naperville, IL
