What's this about "no Medusas" in standard rogue ???

I've been playing Rogue 5.3 as distributed with Berkeley 4.2 and
have been killed by a Medusa every time I've gone down to level 19
(dammit!). Big as life, there is someone on the scoreboard
"killed by a Medusa".  I do NOT think I'm hallucinating!

Is the rogue on Berkeley distribution NOT standard rogue?

What is "standard rogue" ?
