This may or may not be "authoritative", but it is from long experience with
Versions 3.4 (?) and 5.2:

"You feel a pull downward" is from a Gold Detection scroll when there
is no gold left on the level.  As for "being without weapon or armor" being
rare, that's not what the writer said.  When you are not WEARING any armor,
and read "Enchant Armor", or you are not WIELDING a weapon, and read "Enchant
Weapon", you will get the "strange sense of loss."  While the latter is
highly uncommon, the former happens all the time, like on levels 9-16 when
you haven't found any leather armor.
