Message-ID: <291@opus.UUCP> Date: Thu, 29-Mar-84 18:41:35 EST Article-I.D.: opus.291 Posted: Thu Mar 29 18:41:35 1984 Date-Received: Sat, 31-Mar-84 07:46:54 EST Organization: NBI, Boulder Lines: 15 <> We have a vegetable garden, and we brew our own beer. Question: Are the spent grains and hops usable as mulch, or as part of compost? I have no worry about the spent grain itself - it's mostly husks and fiber from the barley kernels. (Note: This is refuse from brewing - BEFORE any fermenting.) However, the spent grain and hops are all mixed together, and I'm worried about using the hops. I have read once (I forget where) that there is some problem in using hops because of some of the acids or oils. I would like to know if this is true and, if so, whether mixing it into compost will avoid the problem. Since we get several pounds of organic gluck out of a batch of beer, I hate to throw it away. -- Relax - don't worry - have a homebrew. {hao, ucbvax, allegra}!nbires!rcd
