It seems to me that a synonym for 'dead end' is 'no outlet'.  I believe
that I have seen such signs mainly in the New England area.  While
browsing through the area in the vicinity of the 18th Century farm near
the Massachusetts/Connecticut border we came upon a sign saying No Outlet
positioned just a few feet to the left of the entrance to a cemetery!
