An American Army physician visited the Army on training manoeuvres in eastern Europe, and was shown the morgue tent. A number of bodies were lying there, just the upper halves, in neat groups of eight. He asked the cause of these deaths, and why they were arranged that way. The reply was that these were the remains of squads of raw recruits being trained in grenade throwing. He asked how this training was done. Reply: [Pull pin of grenade, hold grenade in right hand. With index finger of right hand, mark off fingers of left hand, counting 'one, two, three, four, five.' Tuck grenade beween thighs, continue by marking off fingers of right hand with left index finger, counting 'six, seven, eight ...']
