The origin is Steve Martin (Let's Get Small album). He expects some plumbers to be in the audience so he tells a very technical plumbing joke just for them. The joke invovles the use of a 7 inch Langston-headed Gangley wrench. No one laughs a the punch line, to which he repies "...those plumbers coming tomorrow night?" We now call any joke that relies on the technical expertise to understand a "Langston-Gangley Wrench" joke. This came about when a bunch of us were telling computer jokes with an Art History major present. -Ron
