I've never seen any machine crash when installing a transceiver.
The last time I cut through the table I also happened to be rlogined using the
same cable. After the 3com transceiver was installed, the connection was still
there. The various systems did have some complains from the various ethernet
drivers, but didn't crash. So if your system reboots, there is probably
something wrong in your device driver.

Hardware: 750s, 780, Suns running 4.2, 3Com & DEUNA Ethernet hardware.
