I've posted my solution in net.sources. It consists of a shell script and program that reads received net-news, and selects paths with smallest numbers of hops. Some crude optimization is performed by applying the result to itself. Results of the current run are merged with those preceeding, so each site sort of learns its way around the net. The tag end of some traffic I caught quibbled about how this method was less than ideal, but it's better than nothing, especially for us newcomers. A manual page is included in the sources.
