One of the problems with the older keyboard encoders was: the keyboard, being at the top of the machine (no fan in a standard Apple II. . .) would tend to get hot. The keyboard encoder chip would then either go intermittent, or fry completely (this was mostly a problem with older revision, many-extra-board machines, but just between you and me and the phase of the moon . . .)
