Both are in Byte: Steve Ciarca, "Computerize a Home," Byte, Jan 1980, p. 28. David C. Staehlin, "An 8080-Based Remote Appliance Controller," Byte, January 1982, p. 239. The second article presents a much simpler interface which only requires the ability to toggle one output bit in a particular sequence in time. Does anyone have the schematics to the X-10 modules?
