I do not know if anybody mentioned it but the best article 
that I have seen on the BSR X-10 can be found in 
Microsystems of January 1983.

"Interfacing with the BSR X-10 Home Control System" by D. M.
Gualtieri.

It describes the basic theroy, codes, provides a serial
interface circuit and includes the software required to
run the interface (8080 code).
