Their solution is a techical approach combining encryption and a physical method of making each disk unique. Interesting approach and they intend to stay ahead of the pirates by 6mon to 1 year by continually changing the techniques. Ashton & Tate just bought into the company, Vault Corp, to the tune of $500,000 and AT&T has a large contract with them. It would appear that unprotected software is going to get even rarer.
