Trying to kill the Pter. while it's charging/screeching is impossible but just before and after is easy. You must stick your lance EXACTLY in the center of its mouth or between the tail and feet (basically in the same horizontal plane). The top of the screen is the best place to wait for it and fly backwards slowly (reverse direction between flaps and keep the joystick straight after that) until you get the hang of it.
