They were not, what they were is the first "regularly scheduled broadcast station". All others with prior claims were apparently on now and again, but with no schedule. Also KDKA has ALWAYS been KDKA, it was only in the past 30 or so years that the distinction of "K" for stations west of the Mississippi and "W" for those to the east had been adhered to. By the by, Pittsburgh has two such stations, KQV, an all news station is the other with the "wrong" call sign.
