The reason fire trucks are yellow is visibility.  Turns out the lime
green ones are the most visible.  Most people find this a little too
sick so they settle on yellow.  Red is nearly invisible at night.  All
the fire trucks in my department (Baltimore County, MD) are being changed
over to yellow as they are repainted.
