Speaking of Volkswagons as patrol cars. The first VW bug that I saw as
a partol car was in Wilmington NC (Famous for the Battleship North Carolina
and as the last open port of the Confederacy) back in 1970.  It was painted
the same color as the regular WPD patrol cars and had the same light bar on
the roof.  The only problem was that the light bar was designed for a HUGE
Chrysler Interceptor (the same cars that CHP and NCSP used) so that it hung
over the sides of the Vdub by about 8" on each side.
