Beagle himself wrote the screenplay.
 
My problem is, I LOVED the movie (one of the best Christmas experiences of
my life), but I had not read the book beforehand (I read it after).  I still
think the movie is well worth seeing, but I am not sure of the effect on one
who has read the book beforehand.  One other thing, the animation is all
Japanese (However, I LIKE Japanese animaton!)
