As stated in a previous article by fortune!grw, "Romancing the Stone" is
a term used by jewellers that refers to the process of cutting and
polishing a rough stone to bring out its full value.

The title fits the plot and story line, but much more important is the
analogy of wall-flower heroine Joan (as a rough stone) who endures
refining (or romancing) to blossom and display her full value (as a
finished gem).
