I think the writer has a limited idea of the source of the USA's
greatness. I might have attributed some credit to the Northern Europeans
(especially English and Scandinavians) who came here and cleared the land.

These peoples developed a clear conception of law and obeyed it.

Around the Mediterranean, the vendetta is still the main redress for
grievances.

Before I receive floods of raving flames, I am a Mediterranean and have
lived in many of these countries.  I speak from observation.
