Indeed, as a style of music it's not especially original - just standard garage-rock, except faster, louder and with agressive/obscene lyrics. It is yet another attempt by the younger generation to break with plastic, commericalized America. The lyrics assure limited air- play. You're not likely to hear the Dead Kennedys on Solid Gold. The music itself (sans lyrics) while energetic, tends to sound the same. Try listening to 10 punk tunes in a row - except for the lyrics, it's often hard to tell them apart. I'm told that many hard-core punkers tend to avoid drugs and alcohol. They go to punk clubs where they know the people, where they know the band. There's very little concern with fame and 'making it'. The music is loud, the dancing is physical and agressive. It's an urban American ritual, which promotes group unity, meaning and identity. Of course, then there's the Sid Vicious variety. Question: There are a number of sub-catagories of punkers - 'skin heads', 'Oi', etc. Anyone know what the differences are? ,Karl
