Yet another list of great rock guitarists, by decade:
1960's - Clapton and Hendrix, RIP
1970's - John McLaughlin, Steve Howe, and Robert Fripp
1980's - Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse, and Eddie Van Halen
The above doubtless purely a reflection of my proggie/fusion roots.
I haven't seen Holdsworth mentioned in this "discussion" so far.
Anyone into electric guitar should really make a point of listening
to Road Games, the "Mini-LP" (i.e they ran out of money after taping
less than 30 minutes) released last year.  Really amazing stuff.
