My vote for greatest bassist:  Stanley Clarke  (Return to Forever; solo..)
(I really can't believe no one mentioned him before I did!)

Jack Bruce?  Good voice, but sort of a phartty sound and not that 
inventive.  Also played a 5 or 6 string bass alot.  Different...

Enough of my opinons...
