Wrong.  It was indeed written by the "glitz-pop" Neil Diamond, back around
'66 or so.  He released it as a single (Bang 556) in 1968.  A reggae (if
they called it that at the time) artist named Tony Tribe covered it; UB40's
version is based on his.
