He sings with a reed in his mouth to produce that wispy but deep resonant voice. There is a TV commercial (a cartoon type) with a dog sitting in a chair, legs crossed, and a guitar on his top leg (?) singing in the exact same style/voice as Leon's. This is how Leon sang on Sat. Nite Live. Maybe it is Leon's voice in the cartoon commercial?
