The submitter actually mailed a copy through some host who'll forward it to the ARPANET, in addition to posting it. 2. Some of the news groups line net.micro and net.unix-wizards are crossfed into a corresponding ARPANET-wide distribution list such as INFO-MICRO and UNIX-WIZARDS respectivly. 3. BRL-VGR in collaboration with SEISMO (a host on both USENET and ARPANET) uses the Berkeley networking utilities (rsh, etc...) to transport the news directly from one spool directory to the other without using an intervening mail hop. The control methods keep it straight, but I'm not quite sure exactly how. I think that a file is kept with just the number of the article to be sent.
