Coming from an area between the East and the Midwest (eastern Ohio) I
seem to split the difference on root and roof: root rhymes with shoot
and roof tends to have the oo sound of book (but sometimes the other
sound creaps in). Route sounds like root or rout, depending upon context --
but I haven't figured out exactly what about the context matters
(It's not noun vs. verb).
