I tried to teach my cats to use their scratching posts (they had two floor to ceiling posts). They did use them when I was around. But it didn't keep them from my couches and chairs when I was gone or from climbing the curtains at *any* time. I don't like the insinuation that people who aren't able to train their pets shouldn't have them. I don't abuse my cats and they didn't seem to be in any pain after declawing - they ran around the same although they licked their paws more often. My vet let them sleep together the night they were there so they didn't even seem to be frightened. Their experience from being fixed seemed to frighten and pain them much more! M.
