Safire's column in the NY Times Magazine about a month ago
discussed how Maryland was about to censor its state song,
since the verses to "Maryland, My Maryland" (to the tune of
O Tannenbaum) are mostly very strong Confederate dogma,
replete with references to "Northern scum" and the like.
Are there any Terrapins out there who know all the lyrics?
From what Safire quoted it sounds quite offensive, but
better that than the homogenized pap found in the generic
anthems of today.  What'll they do next, censor that beautiful
state flag?
