Judy questions the value of repetition of prayers for remission of sins punishment. She did NOT mean forgiveness! The absolution by the priest is the forgiveness of the sin. The remission of the punishment is accomplished by fasting, good works, mortification and prayer. Now what we worry about is the mindless repetition of the prayer!! 2. Suppose that the Church forbad repeting a prayer. Then the holy sacrifice of the Mass could never be repeated. Christ SAID do this in remembrance of Me. The priest must say the Mass multiple times to do what Christ said. The Mass is a collection of prayers all of which build up to the consecration and the remembrance of Christ. 3. If it is required to say the Mass multiple times then it is required to repeat the prayers of the Mass. It is therefore necessary to say prayers repeatedly. Christ did not mean to contradict Himself, so it must be okay to repeat prayers. 4. As a pragmatic point if the Church did not allow repeated prayer then all prayer would need to be extemporaneous. 5. Here is the clincher (I hope). Christ was asked how to pray? In answer He composed the Our Father. It is reasonable to assume that it could be in multiples if it could be said more than once. 6. To forbid multilple repetitions of a single prayer at a sitting (kneeling?) would mean: extemporaneous prayer required or multiple prayers be memorized or a very large prayer book needs to be bought. None of which is conducive to getting people to pray. NOT BAD! I think I'll save this. Toodles everyone. Thanks for reading this. (Bye Judy). Vince Marchionni V6M@PSUVM.BITNET
