If a huge majority of apples are not interested when you try for them, the wasted effort can be tremendous. Number 2 sounds marvelously effortless, but may be rather frustrating, when, in fact, no apples proffer themselves (or the ones that do are invariably full of worms). However, I would rather be in a situation where the apples normally wander into my clutches by magic, and I can STILL make a #1 type effort when necessary. 2 is easier to change to 1 than vice versa, because changing 2 to 1 necessitates changing your behavior, while changing 1 to 2 necessitates altering the nature of apples in general.
