Stop focusing on individuals as both the end and the means to the end. Seek activities that interest you personally, and you will meet others who share them. This removes the need for "small talk", as there is obviously common ground for conversation. I am currently without a SO, and am using the time to explore karate, sailing, and am contemplating a pilots license. Were I attached, I might not be so inclined.
