Skate-USA Inc., of Miami, say that their high-density polymer surface, Astro-Ice, is virtually identical to ice in appearance and skating sensation. The company says an Olympic-size rink of synthetic ice would cost almost $300,000, in comparison with $450,000 or $500,000 for a conventional rink of the same size. But Skate-USA Inc. maintain that maint- enance costs for their rinks would be roughly 1/10 those for ice rinks. This sounds amazing! Is this really true? What, no more fog in the Boston Garden?!?!
