If Naismith was Canadian, why was he in the US?  He must have liked
it better (or he knew the only people capable of playing such a
demanding game could be found here).

Don't go crazy.  There is proof that the Aztec (?) Indians played a
game similar to basketball a looooooonnnnnng time ago!  Naismith just
gave us the modern game of b-ball.
